Penh Lenh

I'm so excited to share some beautiful jewelry pieces from Penh Lenh. My friend Rachel lives in Cambodia and works for this amazing company. She reached out to me to share what she was doing and I could not wait to share. See below for more information about Penh Lenh and the life of an American girl in Cambodia!

Tell me about Penh Lenh. How did it begin, what is its purpose and mission...
Before Penh Lenh had a name or we even began, it started as this beautiful passion my friend Sarah Hale had to create vocational training and job opportunities for women in Cambodia. We decided partnered with the organization Hope for Justice and started Penh Lenh. We did not quite know it would become what it is today, but we have tried to place each decision in God's hands and his promises truly never fail.

Penh Lenh's mission is to empower young women in Cambodia to pursue their life goals through quality education, vocational training, and advanced career opportunities.

Where do the supplies come from?

We use semi-precious stones and handcrafted brass beads and chain from Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma) and also a few select pieces from the good ol' USA.  It was a long process finding venders and partners to source supplies from in Southeast Asia, but we felt it was vital to creating a sustainable business model.

For our first two collections we partnered with some amazing designers from the states.  First, Lindsay Farrer of Simon and Ruby Jewelry in Nashville, TN.  Second, we partnered with Victoria Case in NYC.  Victoria is a stylist with a beautiful eye for design.

How are the designs created?
Our girls are able to design most pieces on their own as our Vocational training program includes everything from seasonal color palettes, designing for the Cambodia market vs. the US, and more.  Everything we sell in Cambodia is designed by our Cambodian artisans and we are working toward the same for the US market as well.

How can one purchase products from Penh Lenh?

Penh Lenh currently sells in both Cambodia and the US.  For each country, we have very different marketing strategies.  In the US, our strategy is based heavily on online advertising and cross promotion with strategic alliances with bloggers, celebrity endorsements, non-profits, as well as targeting partnerships with retailers.  We are currently working on a really exciting partnership that we will hopefully be able to announce soon!

For Cambodia, it is much more of a grassroots approach. There are no online sales here (because there is no postal system here....crazy, I know) so if anyone wants to purchase Penh Lenh, they have to know about one of our 8 consignment stores found in 3 cities in Cambodia.  To get the word out, we use a combination of "leave behind" cards at coffee shops, hotels, and restaurants, we love to host events or trunk shows, and we have several tuk-tuk ads throughout the city.  Do people in the US know what tuk-tuks are?  If not, in simple terms, it is Cambodia's version of a taxi.

When you moved to Cambodia did you know you would stay? What kept you there?
My initial plan was to move to Cambodia for six months, set up and launch the program and train someone else to run Penh Lenh.  I quickly saw this was not a sustainable plan, and not to mention fell in love with the work, the girls, and growing Penh Lenh to provide opportunities for as many girls as possible.  It has been two years now, and I do not plan on leaving anytime soon.  My heart is here now and I am completely invested in the work we do.  This may seem like a cop-out answer, but I can only say it has been God who brought me here and God who has kept me here.

How is life different from the USA?
Life is vastly different here.  For starters, I drive a moto (like a small motorcycle), I've learned to enjoy crickets as a road-trip snack, and I speak a new language! Sure, I do not have a lot of the convenient amenities I had while living in the US (central AC, hot water, a washing machine, starbucks), but I wouldn't trade my life here for any of it.  The work we do is heartbreaking at times, and complicated, but the hope outshines it all.  Seeing God's promises fulfilled is my absolute joy.  I heard so many times that God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called and boy is this true in my case.

Thank you so much Rachel for a peek into your life and introducing NYC to Penh Lenh Jewelry.

Gifts of Love

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to do a blog about Valentine's Day Gifts. I've divided the gifts into 5 relationship type categories. I hope it spurs your imagination and inspires some loving ideas!

For the Frans in your life...

For the single ladies out there, I've always hated when people turn Valentine's Day into "Singles Awareness Day". LADIES...why do we do this to ourselves?! This only ends up drawing more attention to the fact that you are dateless on Valentine's...stop it! I try to come from the mindset that Valentine's Day is a celebration of the love in your life. Love does not just come from a boyfriend; friends are an amazing source of love and encouragement. Try your best to celebrate Valentine's Day with joy each year with or without a boyfriend, be grateful for the people around you.

That said, men and women, celebrate your friends! It isn't necessary to go all out, but everyone likes to feel remembered. My friend Lindsay is making custom cards for her friends this year. We actually had dinner and crafted some sweet notes to mail to people this week. It is a cheap and easy way to let those you are closest to know you care.

Pinterest has lots of great ideas, here are some I found!

Sister Sister...

I have a younger sister. We usually don't exchange gifts at Valentine's Day, but this post got me thinking about what I would buy her if we decided to. Mer suggested a Birchbox.

A Birchbox is always a great gift! What girl doesn't love beauty products? The cool thing about Birchbox is it exposes you to things you might have never tried. They send samples and a few full sized beauty products once a month to your home. They also have a version for men which isn't a bad idea for the gentleman in your life.

Will you go out with me? Can I have your number?

If you're in a dating relationship, or the "getting to know you" phase, you don't want to place too much emphasis on Valentine's Day. For some, it is a holiday that comes with a lot of pressure and baggage. My suggestion is don't do anything out of the ordinary. Go to dinner, have a laugh, see a movie, maybe even spring for some flowers.

Boyfriend/Girlfriend...i like you...a lot.

Now this is when you can get a little creative. At this stage of a relationship your expression of love on Valentine's Day is purely based off of each others personality. I'm trusting that you know the person you are dating and what they enjoy. Surprise flowers at work, tickets to a show, manicure and pedicure gift card, a fun day trip, a piece of clothing or an accessory your significant other has been lusting after are all excellent ideas.

If I currently had a boyfriend, I would want him to consider these items as gifts :)

My current obsession. Rose Gold Licorice Heels from Kate Spade.

BaubleBar is a great place to find affordable jewelry that is still fabulous.
Here are few pieces I'm lusting after. It was so hard to narrow it down.

Here are some easy day getaways from NYC.

Visit a few wineries on the North or South Fork of Long Island. You can take the train, rent a car, or spring for a car service. Here are two of my favorites out in the Hamptons!

Another great day gateway is Beacon, NY. The Metro-North can take you to so many wonderful quaint towns along the Hudson River. Pick one and have an adventure!

Married...in it to win it.

I think sometimes married people forget about Valentine's Day. They have been together for so long, the normalcy of life may have dimmed the passion flame. Use the Valentine's holiday to ignite it once again, remind each other of why you really love your life partner. I think you can be more sentimental when you are married...hand written notes, weekend getaways, sentimental jewelry pieces, his and hers massages. I love the idea of a man buying his wife a full glamorous head to toe outfit and then taking her to a show and dinner.

Gift or no gifts this Valentine's Day, I hope you all are able to spend it with people that you love.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends. John 15:13

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. Mark 12:30-31

Christmas 2013

I'm home for a week with my family in SC. Our normal routine includes my mother, sister, and myself going to my Grandparent's for dinner Christmas Eve (after church of course), and then them coming to ours' Christmas Day. The cooking responsibilities generally fall to me. I usually fail to disappoint (minus one year I attempted Cassoulet and it was an epic fail...I'll stick to getting my fix at Buvette). And of course it's not Christmas without some holiday jewelry sparkle.

This year the menu included a horseradish herb butter rubbed Rib Roast complimented by mixed colorful carrots and asiago cheese scalloped potatoes. The meal ended with a taste of Paris, French Chocolate Mousse (the recipe we cooked at a cooking class in Paris, Christmas 2012).

The day was filled with gifts, Champagne, Apples to Apples, family and full bellies. Parker (our family dog) even snuck a taste.

(caught red handed)

Happy Birthday Jesus.
